The Brazilian butt lift or the contouring of the buttocks is a type of plastic surgery procedure that will make your butt look larger by injecting fat that was extracted from the patient’s body. The purpose of the intervention is to achieve an aesthetic improvement in the buttocks.
The fat that will be used for the contouring and butt lift procedure can be harvested from areas of the body such as the abdomen, thighs, and hips. Usually, plastic surgeons prefer to collect the fat from these areas where the adipose tissue naturally accumulates. In addition, by reducing the size of the thighs, abdomen, and hips, the patient can achieve larger and rounder buttocks.
Butt enhancement procedures are commonly performed nowadays, and their results are usually permanent. However, there are certain things you need to know and do in order to sustain the results of the intervention.
Candidates for butt enhancement procedures
These plastic surgery procedures are recommended for people who are not happy with the size or the natural shape of their buttocks. The procedures can considerably improve both the size and the shape of the butt, especially when implants are used at the same time with fat transfer to the buttocks. In this manner, superior aesthetic results can be achieved.
The patient should be in good health before considering undergoing the surgery. People who suffer from neurologic conditions or heart and lung conditions might not be eligible for the butt enhancement surgery. When fat transfer to the buttocks is performed, the patient also needs to have an area of the body with an excess adipose tissue so the doctor can harvest the fat from there and inject it into the butt area. Patients whose body does not have areas with fat tissue are not eligible to undergo butt enhancement procedures because this requires fat transfer.
Preparing for the butt enhancement procedure
In some cases, the plastic surgeon might advise the patient to gain or lose weight before scheduling the procedure. As a general rule of thumb, the patient should have about six kilograms more than his/her ideal weight before undergoing the Brazilian butt lift procedure or any contouring procedure that requires fat transfer to the buttocks.
How is the butt lift performed?
The contouring or lifting of the buttocks is usually performed under general anesthesia. Once the anesthetic takes effect, the plastic surgeon can start with the liposuction used to collect the required fat. As we have mentioned before, the abdomen and thighs are commonly targeted with liposuction to gather the necessary amount of fat. The liposuction procedure used is minimally invasive and has few negative effects on the tissues targeted. Once the plastic surgeon has harvested the required amount of fat, he will start to contour the buttocks depending on the patient’s desires. The fat is then injected into the buttocks area with the help of a small cannula. Using this method, the post-operative scar will be very small, and the chances for the injected fat cells to be rejected are nonexistent. The recovery period after this intervention usually lasts about four weeks.
The recovery period after butt enhancement
During the first two weeks after the procedure was performed, the patient should avoid sitting down or lying on his/her back because this can reduce the level of fat absorption. After the first two weeks, the patient can use pillows or special chairs to sit on the dorsal part of the thighs instead of on the buttocks. Mild physical exercises are allowed, but the patient should keep in mind that intense physical exercises can prolong the recovery process and reduce the amount of fat, including from the buttocks area. At the same time, the patient can have lymphatic massages, but not before the wounds have healed completely. The lymphatic massages should target the areas where liposuction was performed and not the buttocks area. Wearing the girdle after the butt enhancement procedure is mandatory as it helps in reducing the swelling and in supporting the butt during the recovery period.
Tips to sustain the results of your butt surgery
- Don’t sit on your butt after surgery.
Some patients don’t fully understand the importance of not sitting on their buttocks after the buttock enhancement procedure. A responsible plastic surgeon will discuss this aspect even from the initial consultation as it is essential not only for sustaining the results of the surgery for longer, but also for getting satisfactory results in the first place. It can be a daunting task not to sit on your butt for so long, but it is crucial for the success of the surgery. Whatever the method used for butt enhancement, for the first few weeks and months after your surgery, you need to avoid putting unnecessary pressure on your buttocks at all cost.
- Get a good pillow to use after surgery.
Online you will find many recommendations for different pillows to use after plastic surgery. Some manufacturers say that their pillow can be used from day 1. However, it is your plastic surgeon who should advise you on what pillow to get and when to start using it.
- Don’t overexercise.
Some patients are so excited with the results of the buttock surgery that they want to start working out at the gym as soon as possible to tone the muscles. However, intense physical exercises can lead to weight loss and not only toned muscles, so be careful if you had a butt surgery with fat transfer. At the same time, you shouldn’t start doing physical exercises until you get the green light from the plastic surgeon as it might negatively impact the results of the procedure.
- Exercise regularly.
It might seem like a contradiction in terms considering the previous tip, but it is not. The patient should take it slowly and increase the level of difficulty of the physical exercises gradually, and only upon the recommendation of the surgeon. Working out regularly will help you sustain the results of your butt surgery and provide you with a toned body.
- Keep the area of the surgery clean.
We should have probably started the list with this one as it is very important for achieving good results after surgery and avoiding vicious scarring and unwanted complications. Because the incisions are performed in an area where bacteria can be found in big numbers, it is essential to follow the plastic surgeon’s recommendations and keep the area clean.
- Avoid putting on weight.
If you have undergone a butt enhancement procedure with fat transfer, your plastic surgeon might have asked you to gain some weight before the procedure was performed. When this happens, you need to be careful and avoid putting in more weight after the procedure as it might alter the results of the intervention.
- Don’t start a diet.
Trying to lose weight after undergoing a butt enhancement procedure is not a very good idea. If you had butt implants, they might look too big, and their edges might become visible if you lose a lot of weight. If you had fat transfer, the fat might disappear from the buttocks area too.
- Avoid putting too much pressure on the buttocks.
This is valid not only for the first few weeks after the surgery, but also for the first six months. If possible, avoid driving, sitting for too long, and even lying on your back for a prolonged period.
The butt augmentation surgery can provide impressive results for patients who desire an increase in the volume of the buttocks or a change of shape. The results achieved after butt enhancement surgery are permanent, but during the recovery period, the patient needs to put in the effort not to apply pressure on the buttocks as this might alter the results of the procedure.
Achieving impressive results after the butt enhancement procedure is not a difficult task if the surgery was performed by a talented, board-certified plastic surgeon. However, the plastic surgeon can only do that much when it comes to helping you maintain the results of the intervention. Choosing a responsible and experienced plastic surgeon will prove to be priceless as he will also be able to provide you with important recommendations on what to do after the surgery.
Avoiding gaining too much weight or losing weight after the intervention is essential to sustain your results, as well as getting a good pillow to use during the recovery period.
